The Stars in the Sky
Here's a partial bibliography of the sources for the stories on "The Stars in the Sky":
"The King's Wise Advisor" -- a folktale from India I've heard many oral versions of this tale. I first worked in this story to tell at my parents' 50th wedding anniversary party because it embodies the way they've always lived their lives. You can find a written version A Thorn in the King's Foot.
"A Full Measure of Wisdom" -- a folktale from Yugoslavia I love this story because I need all the wisdom I can get! Written versions can be found in Yugoslav Folk-Tales retold by Nada Curcija-Prodanovic and in Noodlehead Stories by Jagendorf.
"Lady Ragnall" -- a tale from Old England I've heard dozens of versions of this old story. It dates back to Chaucer and before. I had to include this story on my first CD because it's my husband's favorite! Written versions can be found in The Maid of the North by Ethel Johnston Phelps and Best Stories from the Texas Storytelling Festival by Finley Stewart.
"The Stonecutter" -- a tale from Japan I originally found this tale in The Crimson Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang, and have since heard many other versions. Although I've often asked Japanese students if they've heard it, none ever have.
"The King and His Falcon" -- a tale from Asia & Europe I believe that the lesson of this story is of the utmost importance in today's world. Written versions of this story can be found in Doorways to the Soul by Elisa Pearmain and The Book of Virtues by William Bennett.
"The Stars in the Sky" -- an English folktale This is one of my very favorite stories, and it's dedicated to my dear friend Wanda, who loves it even more than I do. Written versions can be found in The Maid of the North by Ethel Johnston Phelps and English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.
"The Hedley Kow" -- an English folktale I always introduce this story by saying that it is about the kind of woman I want to become. Written versions can be found in Tatterhood and Other Tales by Ethel Johnston Phelps and English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.
"Gather Together" -- song Words and Music by Debra Olson Tolar Guitar by Neil Shah I'd wanted to write a song about storytelling for several years. Here it is!
